Introduction to Bushcraft

Description: The course is aimed at first-timers or those with little experience. It will suit those who wish to undertake easy overnight bush trips using tents or huts close to road ends. 

Prerequisites: Participants must:

  • Be 18 years of age (or 14 if their attendance is agreed to by a guardian).
  • Be fit to travel for 4+ hours across hill country on track with a full pack.

Learning outcomes: on completion, the participant will have a basic capability to: 

  • Plan and execute an easy bush trip involving camping out.
  • Operate in an environmentally responsible manner.
  • Understand basic first aid and survival.
  • Select and use suitable clothing and equipment.
  • Operate stoves and manage fuels safely. 
  • Carry out map work and route finding on track (applying basic map to ground skills and route finding).
  • Use bush walking skills (moving effectively with a group along a track).
  • Act safely near water.

Assessment: The course does not have a formal assessment, but the participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

Instructor’s qualifications: Basic Bushcraft is taught by warranted MSC instructors with a minimum qualification of Outdoor Leader.
